Hempstead is looking to raise at least $1,200 to pay for one summer job under the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. The program is the city’s annual summer jobs initiative, which started in late 1990s but picked up steam under the administration of former Mayor Alex Knopp.

By calling on his fellow council members for individual $100 donations toward the program, Hempstead is hoping to raise the money. So far, the effort has generated $1,000 from Hempstead and fellow members Sarah Mann, Dave McCarthy, Carvin Hillard, Fred Bondi, Jerry Petrini, Nick Kydes, Bruce Kimmel, Michelle Maggio and Michael Geake.

Hempstead, a Republican, has reached out to the Democratic caucus for help.

“I believe we must do all that we can to keep the young people of our community occupied, especially over the summer,” said Hempstead in a statement. “It is important not only to them, but also to our community. It’s a win for them, their parents and the city.”

Maggio, the owner of Mike’s Deli in East Norwalk, agreed. She employs several students throughout the year.

“Many people say our children are the future, but this gives us the opportunity to make sure those children have the opportunity to stay on the right track.”
