Smith describes his paintings as satiric in nature. They deal with cultural and sociological ideas and issues such as the environment, class relationships and beauty that is skin-deep.
“I enjoy the questions created by a divergent collection of images, each with its own specific symbolism," said Smith.
Smith was born in New York City and received his B.F.A. in painting, with a minor in photography, at the Cleveland Institute of Art. His work has been exhibited in the Northeast, as well as in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Other new members are Eric Chiang, of Westport, Conn.; Chris Coffin, of Fairfield, Conn.; Sara Conklin, of New York City and Washingtonville, N.Y.; Lauren Cotton of Wilton, Conn.; and Mary Elizabeth Peterson, also of Westport.
Silvermine Arts Center is one of the oldest artist communities in the U.S. Its 5-acre campus in New Canaan consists of a nationally renowned artist guild, an award-winning school of art offering classes for all ages, an arts and fine crafts shop, and a gallery offering over 20 contemporary and historic exhibitions annually.
Silvermine is a nonprofit organization that also offers an educational outreach program, Art Partners, and hosts lectures, performances, film screenings and special events.
Silvermine Galleries are open Wednesday through Saturday from noon-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
