Red Cross Offers Aid to Firefighters

STAMFORD, Conn. — While the Stamford firefighters spent Christmas Day battling the fire on Shippan Avenue and securing the area, the Red Cross was also on the scene, providing food and water to the emergency personnel.

"Canteen operations are important in providing food and water to first responders to help keep them hydrated, warm and energized during long responses,” Paul Shipman, chief communication officer of the Connecticut Red Cross, said in a statement.

“We feel for what these firefighters are enduring on such a tragic and dangerous response,” Ronnie Tella, director of emergency services for the Connecticut Red Cross, said in the statement. The group also tried to be a source of empathy and moral support foranyone in need of it, she said.

Tom and Sue Kiphut, owners of Fiddler’s Green, also donated food and water to the Red Cross for its relief efforts Sunday. The owners, staff and patrons of the Shippan Irish/American pub also assured the volunteers to return if they needed more, the statement said.

The Red Cross extends deepest sympathies to the family.
