The 24-year-old Stratford resident previously attended the Audio Research Institute in New York City, where he earned an associate's degree in audio technology in 2009.
The degree led to an internship at Kenny’s Castaways, a bar and rock club on Bleecker Street where Bruce Springsteen gave his first New York City performance. Rosa worked as a stagehand setting up microphones and sound equipment for bands and performers.
Because he did not make a lot of money, he began working in sales at the Apple Store in Stamford, where he is currently a certified software trainer.
Although he considered his college days behind him, Rosa decided to pursue a bachelor’s in social science, not only because he has always had an interest, but to further his career.
“Now that I am getting married and want to start a family, this will set a good example for my children,” he said.
Going back to school was a big decision that involved a lot of research, Rosa said.
His fiancée, Melissa Valendra, a Spanish teacher in the Stamford school system, heard about UB’s IDEAL program, which offers flexible class time and online courses and suggested Rosa enroll.
Rosa, who is just completing his first course in the program, said what he enjoys most is the schedule and the convenience of UB’s Stamford campus. He added that he was inspired by his teacher, Prof. Abdullah, who finished her education in a similar manner.
“It is intense, but it is flexible and I am able to balance my time with work, and I really like that,” he said.
Once Rosa completes his degree, he hopes to advance with the Apple Company to work in human resources at the corporate level.
“I have always been intimidated about going to school, but now I am excited and happy to be there,” he said.
