NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Father’s Day on the water, summer camp and the safety of children playing sports were some of the things on the minds of people in New Canaan when we spoke to them Thursday afternoon.
Lisa Ippolito of New Canaan said she’s a little concerned about her 8-year-old son, Paul Matthew, playing football because of all she has heard about youth players sustaining concussions. As much as she loves the game, Ippolito says she would feel better if they had a safer option for third-graders. “I want to know why we don’t do touch football in third grade,” she said.
Her younger son, Christofer, 6, was thinking about basketball and soccer. “He’s all about sports,” his mom said.
Eliana Chervin, 16, of Fairfield, had vacation on her mind. The Greens Farms Academy student has been out of school for more than a week, so she’s free to focus on trips to Newport, R.I., and other locales. “I’m thinking about summer vacation,” she said.
Chervin’s father Brad, 48, was focused on something more immediate: Father’s Day and the chance to take his boat out. “I’ll sail on Long Island Sound all day Sunday,” he said, passing over the ties and cologne.
Allie Ferguson, 17, of New Canaan, was also thinking about summer and some time away from St. Luke’s School. “I’m thinking about this great weather,” she said, stopping to have a bite of ice cream on Main Street. “It’s been rainy all week.”
Ferguson was joined by her grandmother Judy Hall, who was visiting from La Jolla, Calif. She wasn’t focused on anything in particular. “I’m just sitting here,” she said.
Andrew Garsson, 62, was relieved the rain from earlier in the week was gone and took some time to enjoy a nice afternoon after buying a birthday card for a friend. Although Garsson lives and works in town, he had not been in the shopping district for a while. “I wanted to see what’s here now,” he said.
Anthony and Peggy Davis of Westfield, N.J., were also happy to stroll and shop on Elm Street. “How could you not enjoy such a beautiful day?” Anthony Davis said.
