Weston police responding to reports of a foul odor at a home on Newtown Turnpike in Weston found a menagerie of hundreds of exotic birds and snakes — both alive and dead. They called in animal experts to rescue the animals, many of which were in poor health. Police said the property owner had moved to his home after a problem at his New York State-based pet store.

Two Stratford police officers fired their weapons during a confrontation with a gun-wielding 40-year-old man who shot at them first early Wednesday in the Lordship neighborhood. The suspect, identified as Timothy P. Johnson was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, and the officers were placed on paid administrative duty while state police investigate.

Redding Police Chief Doug Fuchs has a new buddy at the station: Kato, a 2-and-a-half-month-old German shepherd puppy he is training to become a guide dog for a blind or visually impaired person. He is working with the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation in Wilton.
