FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- An air quality alert was issued for Fairfield County for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday as temperatures were expected to soar into the mid-90s, the National Weather Service said.

Summer weather returns in force Wednesday, and residents will feel the high heat and humidity. The forecast calls for sunny skies and hot temperatures, with highs between 90 and 95 degrees, with a breeze of 5 to 9 mph, the weather service said. Isolated showers are possible later Wednesday in the afternoon and evening.

During the day, ground level ozone within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said in issuing the air quality alert.

Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. There is an increasing likelihood of respiratory symptoms and breathing discomfort, says DEEP.

The heat is expected to break a bit on Thursday, with temperatures forecast for 10 degrees cooler in the low 80s, the weather service said. Heavy rains is predicted for Thursday night.
