Aquarion Issues Water Emergency In New Canaan

Updated, 5:30 p.m. : Aquarion Water customers in New Canaan, Darien and Stamford may be experiencing discolored water or low water pressure due to excessive water demand as a result of the heat Wednesday. Water demand is expected to decrease in the evenings as the temperatures drop.

Aquarion issued a statement recommending that people do not use water until it is clear, as it may cause discoloration of laundry and is not aesthetically pleasing. The discoloration results from temporary disturbance of water flow, which stirs up naturally ocurring minerals.

"It is important to note that no compromise to the safety and integrity of the water supply has occurred," Darien Health Director David Knauf said. "The discoloration is similar to what happens when the service lines are flushed. Testing performed today showed adequate levels of chlorine to protect public health. Residents are asked to reduce their water usage until the system clears."

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Aquarion Water Co. has issued a water emergency notice for customers in New Canaan and Darien.

The company says the emergency has resulted in discolored water and low pressure and it’s suggesting residents not use discolored water.

A message on Aquarion's customer service phone number says the company is aware of the emergency and is working to fix it. No other details were immediately available.
