The weather forecast isn't pretty: It's probably snowing as you're reading this.
If you live on a side street, you know the drill. It's going to be a while. The Norwalk Department of Public Works needs at least 14 hours after the snow stops falling to clear all the city's streets, because of the amount of snow already out there, according to a statement from the city of Norwalk.
The National Weather Service expects snow to fall from 6 a.m. Tuesday to 7 p.m. Wednesday. There may be freezing rain from late Tuesday morning into the afternoon. A mix of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected late Tuesday night, transitioning into mainly freezing rain late Wednesday morning into early Wednesday afternoon, before tapering off late Wednesday.
The statement, issued by Mayor Richard Moccia, asks for "the cooperation and assistance of residents and businesses" in this difficult time. He says:
Don't clear sidewalks or ends of driveways during the storm, if possible, so as to avoid having to repeatedly shovel.
To adequately clear streets, plows must push snow to the curbside of the street. The volume of snow now is such that clearing the roads curb to curb is no longer possible.
Clearing school parking lots and driveways requires at least an additional six hours.
Special requests (digging out buses, cars, AAA requests, special streets to be done, medical conditions, elderly, etc.) add to the length of plowing operations.
Vehicles parked on the street continue as the major obstruction to efficient plowing operations. The streets listed below consistently offer the greatest challenges as a result of vehicles parked in the roadway.
Amundsen/Hayes area, Avenues A through D, Bartlett Manor, Benedict Court, Burlington Court, Burlington Court/Place, Clay, Cleveland Terrace, Delaware, Dibble, Disesa Court, Dover, East Beach and Bell Island, Gibson Court (Cars on Clay prevent getting to Gibson), Gilbert, Godfrey, Hamilton, Lincoln, Lindenwoods, North Bridge, Ohio, Ohio Avenue Extension, Outer Road, Paradiso, Raymond Street, Robbins Square East, Roscoe, Truman Court, Yankee Doodle Court.
