College Student From Bethel Killed In Thanksgiving Eve Bike Crash In Texas

BETHEL, Conn. — A 21-year-old college student from Bethel was killed when she hit by a car while riding her bicycle on Thanksgiving Eve near her campus in Abilene, Texas, police said.

Casey Ellis of Bethel, who was studying social work at Abilene Christian University, was identified as the victim, police said. Ellis graduated from Bethel High School in 2013. 

The crash occurred at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, at the intersection of Ambler Avenue and North Judge Ely Boulevard in Abilene, police said. 

Ellis was riding west on Ambler Avenue and entered the intersection of North Judge Ely Boulevard against a red light, police said. 

A white 2014 Ford Focus driven by 19-year-old Charles Schaefer was northbound on North Judge Ely Boulevard had the right-of-way and was crossing Ambler with a green light when the car struck the bicyclist as she crossed in front of the car, police said. 

Ellis was transported to Hendrick Medical Center by ambulance and was later pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Mike McAuliffe, police said.

She was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, police said. The investigation was continuing, but no charges had been filed, police said.
