FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- After the death of a Connecticut National Guard member in a Thursday morning highway crash, Gov. Dannel Malloy directed the U.S. and state flags to be lowered to half-staff across the state.

The Connecticut National Guard member died in a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 95 at the border of Rye and Port Chester, N.Y., while on a routine transport of training material.

The Connecticut National Guard has not yet identified the victim, pending notification of the family.

Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman also issued the following joint statement:

“The men and women of the National Guard provide an invaluable service to our state and our country – they are extraordinary ambassadors for Connecticut and the United States. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of all of those involved in today’s accident.

"We join the Connecticut National Guard in mourning the loss of one of our brave soldiers, and our prayers for a quick and full recovery go out to the soldier who was injured.”

Flags will remain at half-staff until services are held, the date of which has not yet been determined.
