NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A woman was bitten by a donkey named Chipper after her dogs confronted the animal at his home on North Wilton Road in New Canaan.

The donkey's owner, Bethany Zaro, said the dogs, German Shepard-husky mixes, had strayed onto her property just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the owner was trying to get the dogs away from the donkey when she was bitten.

“Donkeys are very docile,” said Zaro, who has cared for donkeys for more than 15 years at her property on North Wilton Road. “We’ve never had any problems.”

Zaro said she is treating Chipper for injuries inflicted by the dogs.

Chipper, who is 20 years old, is a miniature donkey and shares space with Poppy, a 22-year-old full-sized donkey.

The New Canaan Office of Animal Control is investigating the incident but did not return calls for comment on Wednesday.

Zaro said she does not know the dogs’ owner or how they got on to her property. The New Canaan Daily Voice has not been able to identify the owner.

According to a nurse at Norwalk Hospital who declined to give her name, the course of treatment for a donkey bite is the same as for any animal: a tetanus shot and a rabies shot as well as treatment for the wound.
