The accident, which occurred at 12:20 p.m. Monday about 20 miles east of New Haven, shut down northbound I-95 near Exit 61 for four-and-a-half hours, the Connecticut Department of Transportation said.

The Dahlia charter bus was carrying about 55 passengers and a driver, NBC Connecticut said. After the crash, passengers could be seen climbing out of the hatch on the roof of the bus on DOT traffic cameras.

Ambulances took passengers to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Middlesex Hospital and Saint Raphael's with different types and severities of injuries, NBC said.

Connecticut State Police were investigating the crash.

"Our thoughts are with those who are injured, and we extend our gratitude to the first responders who are working to protect the safety of all those involved," Gov. Dannel Malloy said. "We urge all those who must travel to use added caution, allow extra time to travel, and reduce speeds as conditions warrant."

The entire coastline of Connecticut was under a Winter Weather Advisory at the time of the crash, and 2 to 4 inches of snow had fallen in the area.
