A 40-year-old woman and 3-year-old boy have been identified as the victims of a double-fatal chain-reaction crash that caused the hours-long closure of a stretch of I-684 in Northern Westchester on Saturday.

State police troopers responded to the motor vehicle crash on southbound 684, south of Exit 4 (Route 172) in Bedford, involving six vehicles, at about 2:30 p.m.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a box truck operated by 59-year-old Henry Valencia of the Bronx was unable to stop due to icy road conditions and struck another vehicle which was stopped in traffic.

The driver, Kerry Hamill of Lee, Mass., and a 3-year-old male passenger were both killed in the crash, state police said. Hamill's wife, Lauren Pellegrino, 40, survived the crash and was transported to Westchester Medical Center with minor injuries, state police said.

The initial collision created a chain reaction involving four additional vehicles. Occupants of the other four vehicles were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The stretch of I-684 remained closed through late Saturday night during an accident investigation.
