Fire Ravages Home Owned by New Canaan School

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A fire severely damaged a home on Frogtown Road in New Canaan on Wednesday afternoon.

No injuries were reported in the home, which is owned by New Canaan Country School and may be a total loss, New Canaan Fire Chief Ed Karl said.

"That's up to the insurance company, but there doesn't look like there's much to be saved," Karl said.

The fire started in the rear of the home at 409 Frogtown Road at 12:28 p.m. Firefighters had to bring in water in tankers because there are no hydrants nearby on the winding, rural road.

David Stoller, director of technology at New Canaan Country School, had been living in the home with his family for the past 25 years, said Tim Bazemore, head of school.

"Obviously, the family is shaken up by the loss of their home, but we're happy they're safe," Bazemore said. "We will rally in support of the family."

The school leases several homes in the area to faculty members, Bazemore said.

As of 2 p.m., firefighters were putting out hotspots. Parts of Frogtown Road were closed to traffic.

Fire crews from Norwalk, Turn of River in Stamford, Noroton Heights in Darien, Wilton, Vista, N.Y., and Pound Ridge, N.Y., helped battle the blaze.
