New Canaan Man Nabbed in Parking Garage Fight

STAMFORD, Conn. — A New Canaan man turned himself into Stamford police Wednesday night as a suspect in the beer bottle fight that took place in the Bell Street Parking Garage at the end of February, Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said.

Hector Melendez, 27, became the fourth arrest made following the incident. He was charged with two counts of both second- and third- degree assault, and conspiracy to commit third-degree assault, police said. His bond was set at $100,000 and he appeared in court Thursday, Shawinsky said.

The other three arrested in connection with the alleged incident are Jeffrey Torres, 28, of Stamford, Steven Bolanos, 23, and Richard Quinones, 25, both of Norwalk.

The alleged incident took place in the stairwell of the parking garage, when the victim discarded his cigarette and the four believed he threw it at them, Shawinsky said. The victim was then hit over the head with a beer bottle and received a puncture wound to the neck, Shawinsky said.

An unopened Sheffield Knife was found at the scene, and police believe it belonged to one of the suspects, but are not sure if it was used in the fight, he said.

The victim, who has since been released from the hospital, received several staples in his head and four stitches to his neck, Shawinsky said.
