At 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, a gas main was hit while work was being done on a construction project near the intersection of Wolfpit Road and Horseshoe Road, police Lt. Stephen J. Brennan said. The area is near Wilton Center and just off Route 7.

It has since been shut down, and police and fire officials are on the scene, Brennan said.

Traffic was being alternated in each direction while the problem was repaired, he said. Brennan said the traffic situation is improving and the road is open, but motorists should still consider it a construction zone during the gas main project.

Traffic may be delayed in this area, and alternate routes are recommended.
