The following is a message from Mike Handler, New Canaan’s director of emergency management.
NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan crews are still working to make roads passable. Thursday’s target areas are Lambert, Chichester, Frogtown, Llewelyn, North Bald Hill, Briscoe, Cross Ridge and the most difficult Braeburn. The drop in overnight temperatures is concerning. The New Canaan YMCA is open as a shelter and you are encouraged to bring your family, medications and bedding. All pets will be accommodated at the animal shelter. Please call the emergency operations center at (203) 594-4100 with any shelter concerns and we will help facilitate any additional needs.
At this time, all New Canaan Public Schools are closed through Nov. 2. Assuming schools open next week, no one will be penalized if they cannot return to school so if you are safely out of town, there is no need to return at this time.
We are still hoping to begin restoration efforts on Friday or Saturday at the earliest. Our best estimate at this time, based on our current Connecticut Light and Power crew levels, is that power restoration could take 10 to 14 days. Please remember to keep generators outside and safely away from doors, windows and vents.
Remain clear of all downed wires and call the emergency operations center with any concerns. Thank you and continue to check on your neighbors.
