Soaring Heat, Storms Steam Toward New Canaan

An indoor pool, like the Westport Weston Family Y, may be a good place to seek refuge from the sweltering heat and thunderstorms expected Saturday in Fairfield County.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Temperatures near 100 degrees and potentially severe thunderstorms are forecast to roil and broil Fairfield County Saturday.

The heat index Saturday is expected to creep near or above 100 degrees throughout Fairfield County, with communities along the coast feeling a few degrees hotter — but that's not all.

"The potential exists for strong to severe thunderstorms to produce damaging winds and large hail in the late afternoon and evening hours," the National Weather Service says.

The National Weather Service also has issued a heat advisory for noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday. "Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside," the Weather Service says. "When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening."

The good news? A cold front moving through with the storms should push temperatures down into the mid-80s Sunday and low-80s during the beginning of next week.
