Metro-North caused the crash through its negligence, said the suit filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport by Elizabeth and Peter Sorensen of Mystic. The lawsuit does not provide specific allegations.

On May 17, the eastbound 4:41 p.m. train from Grand Central Terminal derailed just east of the Fairfield station. The westbound 5:35 p.m. train from New Haven struck the side of the eastbound train.

Elizabeth Sorensen, 65, was a passenger on the train returning to Connecticut and is one of three injured people still in a hospital.

She suffered severe fractures to her legs, arm and pelvis, sustained brain trauma and has undergone multiple surgeries, the lawsuit said. Sorenson is expected to remain hospitalized for several months, her lawyer said.
