NORWALK, Conn. — A man was fatally shot in South Norwalk on Wednesday afternoon, police say.
The black male suffered a single gunshot wound to the abdomen after 3 p.m. in the area of 119 S. Main St., Norwalk Police Sgt. Mark Lepore said. The shooting was not random, according to Sgt. Tom Fern, and police have at least one person of interest in the shooting.
Chief Harry Rilling said at 6 p.m. the victim died. Police do not know the age of the victim, who was pronounced dead at Norwalk Hospital. They are not sure what led up to the shooting.
"We are investigating right now, but we're not making any comments as to cause," Rilling said. "I can tell you that it appears to be unrelated to any of the other incidents that have occurred in the past. It was an isolated, spontaneous incident."
There were rumors of a school bus being involved, but Fern said that was not the case. Although police had some concern for the children in the nearby Side by Side and Columbus Magnet Schools, children were never in danger, he said.
South Main Street was blocked through the afternoon, and cars were being rerouted down Concord Avenue. Residents watched as police investigated at about 4 p.m., when Sgt. Art Weisgerber took photos of what appeared to be a shell casing in front of 119 S. Main St. Police said that a marker in the driveway of the residence signified where the victim was found.
The Rev. Nellie Mann, police chaplain, was quickly on the scene. She said she did not know anything about the victim but said, "It hurts my heart."
"This has got to stop," she said. "It does. We have too many young people dying in this community. ... We have to come together, we really do. It's hard on our community. It's hard on our children."

PERFECTION !
Thank you, Nancy.
5 years working in SoNo and I still have never seen a Norwalk cop walking the beat or even moving more than 10' from his car. More often you only see them when they are listening to their ipods or talking on a cell phone while ignoring the traffic they are supposed to be directing while making overtime.
oh and to the spoon,Stamford Police took the officer to the Norwalk ER themselves in a Stamford police car,Stamford police used Stamfords police dog in Norwalk and Darien used the stop sticks and yes Norwalk helped capture the perp it was a team effort.
I don't think Norwalk hires detectives I think they bring them up from the ranks they are smart well trained and deserve to be our finest.Training and street smart are all qaulities that are expected in any officer most people are disaapointed on how the force is run some are confused many men on the NPD wold make fine dept heads but are more effective on the street we also lost many over 30 officers who left or retired and to replace a 25 year old vet with a kid not even 25 has simply slowed the city down but then again new officers are trained better than those leaving.
I'm sure by the way write you mean well we have fine police force they don't need defending its how the force is run that needs defending spend some time learning what our officers need ignore those who are critical. The suggestions you have are great but as long as Republicans are fighting crime South Norwalk will be fighting the Republicans.
I wasn't going to say a word until all was said but I can't wait no longer. No sense in saying any post is wrong its opinion everyone should be respected ignorance isn't a crime in Norwalk but of course if the city could make money on it LAZ would find a way to ticket us all.
The area of this shooting has hosted within about 1000 foot span of any direction within the last 5 years about 40 shootings that have produced death and complete breakdown of quality of life each time leaving children enough caution tape to play with for days.People have ducked for cover houses have been hit by errant gunfire and people have been detained arrested killed later or taken to court most by the publics help.I know some will say by how the crow flies but that 1000 feet will work for now.Cars have been hit so many times our trained officers don't know if the holes are new or just old ones when they respond from the last shots fired.
The camera that sits in the middle of Concord and South main street(20 feet from todays shooting) has never worked according to officers no longer with the NPD so lets see if they are right, can't miss it its round and looks like the camera in front of lajoies oh and that one works fine when lajoies is broken into according to the same officers lets see if thats true. The camera on the Island Belle works just fine and Calf Pasture beach is great they say and the one across from the leaf collection place on Smith street will pick up a nat on your license plate accoding to parks and rec where two sit trained on leaf litter scumbags cheating the system ought to be the death penalty for them let me tell you.Ever see the signs that tell you those camera's are in place?
Scool busses are a great subject to breach, one on Woodward ave a few years ago was close enough for maybe the kids to see the shooting yet Sal the supt and most teachers knew nothing until the next day, even the bus driver when asked by the media said I could fired if I said anything to the press.( a little inside rat told us)oh and there is more but back to this last shooting.
Odd how some think lajoies problems are less worst than the shootings, anyone wonder why no shell fishing by Lajoies the rest of the year right after the fire? cant be Lajoies has to be all this lead coming from shootings I bet ,no shots fired at lajoies there just a lot of smoke by our Mayors team no crime of course.
Norwalk has some of the best officers in the state and yes they will find this last shooter and he will be brought to justice we have no doubt. No one in South Norwalk wants this anyone who thinks South Norwalk is that slow needs to look at the talent that comes out of the area in the school, the arts or the churches shame on those thinking South Norwalk will just roll over and play dead because they see so much of it.
Maybe its time to look into a mirror and wonder why you don't have a homeless shelter,a Sate detox unit,DCF offices halfway houses,100s of day workers every morning from all over the state via the trains, abundance of HUD housing (good people and bad) polluton from so many places including Manressa the smell of the treatment plant and shootings in the middle of the day and car and house breaks all the time along with the fact there is no parking,or stores that sell one smoke at a time its because South Norwalk does stupid.Of course I havn't called anyone here stupid I'm certain by reading the posts no one has a reason to look into a mirror its what you know not who you know and where you live.
"Norwalk has some of the best officers in the state and yes they will find this last shooter and he will be brought to justice we have no doubt".
Are you for real. They haven't caught any of the other ones of the 9 killings and what seems like 100's of shootings...
Everyone take notice how lwitherspoon attempts to put his B/S political spin on this... Here we have yet another killing and many many other unsolved killings and shootings and lwitherspoon seems to think it's just fine
Also he actually posted on another thread that a cowboy chase up i 95 SPEEDS OVER 100 MPH by the police, people running across 6 lanes of traffic was just fine. I wonder if he would think the same if one of those people ran in front of the bus he was on and the bus hit the guard rail. INSANE.....
The only accuracy in your comment above was the timestamp.
Here's a link to the comments you're referring to, I encourage everyone to read and judge for themselves who was right.

Apparently your logic is that Police aren't allowed to chase criminals who flee. But at the same time, the Norwalk Police should all be fired for not catching criminals. Riddle me this... if the Police are not allowed to chase criminals who flee, then how will they ever catch criminals?
oh man....i saw those guys arguing. thank God i got out of there before i actually witnessed anything!
Or before you got shot.
Norwalk is out of control
We need to bring in the State Police as the NPD is not capable,
i dont live in norwalk so i am really not able to comment. all i know is that no one should escape justice for killing another man, amongst other things. i hope the person who did this is brought to justice.
AmberRose,
If you saw the two guys arguing, you ARE a witness and you should contact the Police immediately. You may be able to tell them something that will help bring the killer to justice. Something you saw might be very important to the investigation, even if it doesn't seem important to you.
It's possible to talk to the Police and still remain anonymous, and your decision to talk to the Police does NOT obligate you to testify in court. If you don't talk to the Police, you may play a part in letting the killer go free. Do you really want that on your conscience?
Please, do the right thing and contact the Norwalk PD immediately.
Here we go again, Tim T and Jane D, The Daily Norwalk's resident haters of the Norwalk PD, are using a human tragedy to try and convince other readers that the Norwalk PD are awful and that Norwalk is an unsafe place to live. I'm not sure why anybody would want to do that, but hey, everyone needs a hobby.
I had to laugh out loud at Jane D's pronouncement that "this case is totally solvable." Sounds like she knows something! I hope she'll share it with the Norwalk PD so they can make an immediate arrest. Oh, right, I forgot... she would never do that because, as she commented a few days ago, she pays her taxes and there's nothing else she could possibly do to help make Norwalk a safer place. She doesn't ask anybody to help her at her job, so why should she help the Police?
Another winning comment of Jane's this evening was when she concluded from the photos that "the detectives look pretty inept." Maybe the next time the Norwalk PD is hiring detectives, they can show Jane D a photo of each candidate, and she can approve/reject them based on whether or not she thinks they look inept in the photo. Then all crimes will be solved and Norwalkers will live happily ever after.
A man lies dead. Jane D and Tim T decide to use the occasion to bash the Norwalk PD, who are by and large professional, dedicated, and caring. Not a single word about the criminal who actually pulled the trigger, and what may have caused him or her to become a criminal. It's all the Police's fault and so now we must bash them. Am I the only one who sees the absurdity of this situation?
lwitherspoon
It seems you support that the NPD can not seem to solve any of the shootings or killings,
Why would that be???
"who are by and large professional, dedicated, and caring"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
lwitherspoon
Do you have no shame but to show your ignorance time and again.
How much did you get for this post
$$$$$$$$$$$
Deny it but no one believe you as your posts are insane.
For those of you who are reading The Daily Norwalk for the first time today, I suggest you check out the comments under the story about the heroic Stamford Police officer who was seriously injured in Norwalk pursuing a criminal who had just committed aggravated assault and robbery. Here's the link:
http://www.thedailynorwalk.com/news/stamford-officer-critically-injured-during-chase
Just like tonight, Tim T and Jane D posted some truly outrageous comments. The best was when Tim T declared that "Each and everyone of these cops should be immediately terminated from their positions." Around the same time that Tim T was writing that, the heroic officer was undergoing three emergency surgeries.
The comments they made showed us that in addition to being cop haters who believe that Police cause all crime, Tim and Jane also believe that Police should not be allowed to pursue criminals who run.
For those of you who are reading The Daily Norwalk for the first time today
Please be aware that lwitherspoon is a stooge for the administration . He will deny this but that what his type does. He will also point out that he once criticized the administration, of course that was a lame attempt to cover up that he is a stooge for the administration.
Also take notice that lwitherspoon will ask for proof time and again but never not once provide any for his ridiculous posts. Also when you provide proof to lwitherspoon will just ignore it and ask for proof once again. This is the game that he plays. He also tends to sign in with multiple user names and agree with his own posts as no one else would be stupid enough to agree with him.
As usual, I provided facts in my comments. As usual, you responded with lies and personal attacks. I'm quite content to let people judge for themselves on this one.
FACTS
Made up facts....as usual
Now quick sign in under another name and agree with yourself.
NO, he's right Tim. In one post you'll berate the police for chaseing someone & in the next theyre terrible because they cant find someone to chase. You are a good example of whats wrong on that side of town. I dont know if you live there, but if you do you should probably look in the mirror for someone to blame. If EVERYONE down there called the police EVERY time they saw something going on the crime would stop & the crminals would leave. Its a very safe operating environment for street crime, largely because of the attitude of the residents, so thats where they go. The police cant help you if you dont help them.
I provided a link to an actual article so that people can see that you make ridiculous comments on a regular basis. How exactly is that a made up fact?
Unlike you and your imaginary friend Mr Nelson, I have never signed in under another name.
....
I don't believe it was a rumor about the school bus...My sons was on that bus and the was had to stop and tell the kids to get down and was an hour or so late getting home so sounds like someone's not telling the truth I also hear that the someone took down all the kids names on the bus
TaraMarie I bet you are right on the money..Its very sad when the children are not safe coming home from school. Its time the NPD admits they need help and call in the State police to do the job they can not. Are we going to wait until an Innocent child is caught in the crossfire and then say something should have been done..
Where is MOCCIA THE MORON ON THIS...Its seem once again he is nowhere to be found. I bet if for some strange reason the NPD solved this one Moccia will be right out front taking praise.
Norwalk Police Sgt. Mark Lepore said. The shooting was not random
Rilling said It was an isolated, spontaneous incident
Make up you minds which one is it
Isolated & spontaneous dont mean random. Not in English anyway.
Ummmm Isolated non-random and spontaneous
We need change at the NPD from the top down from outside the old boys club..Just add this to the long long list of unsolved shootings and killings. Soon we will start hearing the excuse why the NPD can not do what they are overpaid to do.
They're all solveable if people would cooperate.
Broad River is on the money. South Norwalk will always be what it is because its what we made it. We build projects & low income housing, bring down the rest of the property values & create a haven for this stuff.
I would assume people did cooperate if they know it was an argument and have people of interest. It's not the residents job to do the policing. Look at that poor woman in the picture. Did you want her to go run after the shooter? Do you know what she was most likely doing during the shooting, laying on her floor with her body over her children. Been there done that, first order of business is not to get hit by a stray bullet, not to do the police's job.
I'm speaking in general Jane, not to one open & shut case. I'm talking about people watching & knowing about gang activity & tolerating it, closing the blinds when they see drug dealing going on. These things dont appear out of nowhere & it happens there because its acceptable. If it wasnt it wouldnt happen. I'm not saying to run after the shooter. Also protecting you isnt the polices job. Their job is to pick up the pieces, which is often hard because people hesitate to speak up.
The police are the ones tolerating it...If they're not going to do foot patrols, have surveillance, have undercovers they are tolerating it. If police can't protect those that speak up, they are letting the violence continue. At least four of the murders in the past two years were of people who worked with police or spoke up about gang shootings or did something to take a stand against gang violence (but the police don't want you to know that). Where were the police in protecting them? The police are tolerating it not the residents of South Norwalk.
It's a shame too Norwalk leaders are putting federal gang prevention and crime prevention money into the incapable hands of the Norwalk police department. They are just as responsible. Norwalk PD, in addition to the gang prevention just got $40,000 for a new officer? A new officer that's doing what? Certainly wasn't a community police officer. Why does the Norwalk PD only have 4 or 5 Community Officers for all the neighborhoods in South Norwalk? Why isn't that a line item in the budget? As long as the Norwalk PD tolerate it, there will be crime. And there was a span when crime was down in South Norwalk. There was a clean up of the streets and a clean up of the Norwalk PD. We need Internal Affairs down here again in our PD.
You are correct Jane
There was just a case where people cooperated, the McCrae trial and the NPD screwed up in collecting evidence and the judge had to declare a mistrial....
Why weren''t there any cops in the area anyway at 3PM? School was getting out, aren't there usually cops at the schools? How did they manage not to get there in time to catch the shooter?
They're solvable if police knew what they were doing. The detectives in the pic look pretty inept...That could be the real reason. They managed to have undercover cops in the area when they were trying to bring down Tonya McDowell, why aren't they there all the time? All the murders happen on 2 or 3 corners, why aren't there cameras or 24 hour surveillance in those places. Or at the minimum daytime foot patrol. They foot patrol in harlem day and night. Why doesn't Norwalk do that? It's not rocket science. If they did that, they would know who did the shooting or there wouldn't be any shootings...
If the police are incapable or aren't going to try to catch criminals, there is no point putting your own life on the line. Like I said , people put their life on the line in McCrae trial and they still couldn't come up with a conviction...
Personally I think itd be better to level the areas that this stuff goes on in & rebuild with newer more expensive units to rid ourselves of the issue entirely. A win for eveybody. The same people crying over a lack of policing will be crying about racial profiling if they step up patrols or started enforcing ordinances against loitering. When I call the police they come. Every time you see a group of people hanging on the corner call the police. This isnt Harlem, and one of the reasons its so expensive, for taxpayers, to live here is babysitting one small corner of the city. Take responsibility for your neighborhood, it is what you let it be.
Please, they easily spent over 1 million on those license plates checkers ($100,000 a pop from what I hear). If you think they are actually spending any money on patrolling in South Norwalk you are seriously deluded. Cops hang out on Washington Street, chasing girls... I have seen cops parked in a parking lot pull off if they think something is about to happen that would require them to work or file paper work...Patrolling is part of their job and is not above and beyond...It would actually save gas money if officers were on foot.
Taxes have nothing to do with South Norwalk crime, it has everything to do with leaders being ineffective with the money they do have. I wish I would see a cop babysitting a corner. I've never seen a cop babysitting a corner in South Norwalk. I see more cops at construction sites and on Washington Street than I have ever seen patrolling South Norwalk.
A woman got raped and someone was chased by a gunman right in the Webstor Lot at 50 Washington Street. Even a cop admitted, he didn't know how it happened because there was supposed to be an officer sitting in that lot. So no extra money goes into policing South Norwalk. Probably 10% or less of the federal and state money sent to police and serve the South Norwalk community goes to South Norwalk residents...Part of it went to build that skate park in Calf Pasture. Yeah, Norwalk wouldn't have that if they didn't qualify for funding to help low-income residents. But how that's skate park is helping low income kids though beats me...
Say something else...I'll keep going. We'll fix our community and we're going to start by making sure that when federal funds come in to improve the quality of life in South Norwalk, it actually used for that purpose and not spread all around Norwalk for services our kids don't or can't use. We don't need the police, except the Community Police who are okay in our book, we can handle our own because like I've been saying Riling and a lot of others they ain't nothing...
They're solvable if the NPD was not a complete and total failure.
Once a month I have to drive down to Norwalk Transit on Wilson Ave. Neither MLK drive or South Main are comfortable drives back. Sometimes I go through Royaton to U.S.1 in Darien to come home,..how rediculouis is that!
Broad River if you're scared to drive down MLK drive I have to assume you're just a wimp or afraid of minorities...
I came to Norwalk in the 70's. South Norwalk was notorious for violence and
killings then too. Nothing has changed. The Chaplin sounds surprised such
things occur down there. They even built a Police Station down there. I guess
it improves response time somewhat. It gives the hooligans the opportunity to
fire shots into the second floor recreation room of the precinct house as well.
Scores and scores of people know who have the guns as well as their families
and friends.
Isn't there a system set up where people can anonymously text the police
department about such things and more?
Are they frightened to do so? Maybe they just don't want to?
Maybe they just don't care? Forty plus years of the same old stories about
South Norwalk violence, makes it tough to think any of the residence do care.
They sure knew how to report the detriment to their health over the recent
junk yard fire.
That's sad...It did happen near a school bus too...Norwalk PD, this case is totally solvable, get on it and don't collect any evidance illegally.
