Merritt Parkway To Be Resurfaced In New Canaan

STAMFORD, Conn. — A new construction project for the Merritt Parkway between Stamford and New Canaan was approved by the state Tuesday.

The work will include resurfacing a 6.4-mile stretch of roadway, improvements and repairs to 13 bridges on the parkway, a statement said. The project is part of the larger Merritt Parkway Improvement Plan to upgrade and fix safety issues. So far, 19 of the 37.5 miles of the project have been completed.

This portion of the project will be presented to contractors in February, and construction is scheduled for June, the statement said. It will be funded by federal funds and $9.6 million in state bonds. The work should maintain or create 201 jobs in the state, the statement said.

"The Merritt Parkway is one of two main highways in Southwest Connecticut, an essential part of our infrastructure and a major artery of our local economy," said state Sen. Carlo Leone, D-Stamford and Darien. 'We cannot afford to have the Merritt fall into disrepair.”
