Metro-North Track Work To Close Camp Avenue Near New Canaan Border

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Camp Avenue will be closed for seven days beginning Friday, Aug. 21, as Metro-North replaces an outmoded rail spur located along the roadway, city officials said Thursday.

“We understand that this road closure is a major inconvenience for Camp Avenue and area residents, but this project is in the interest of passenger and train safety and requires the upgrading of the Camp Avenue railroad/highway crossing,” said Ernie Orgera, City of Stamford Director of Operations.

The crossing is on the New Canaan Branch of the Metro-North Commuter Railroad. The crossing is on the Darien border, just north of St. John Cemetery. It is just north of the Springdale train station and east of the U.S. Post Office.

Improvements will include the replacement of the existing crossing surface and the installation of underground duct banks.

"We are mindful that this closure should not affect school traffic, so it needs to happen now before the school year begins,” Orgera said.

The complete road closure is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21. It is expected to remain closed until 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27.

On Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23, there will be no train service between New Canaan and Stamford. Buses will run on the branch instead.
