Morning Fire Destroys New Canaan Home

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Fire destroyed a Fawn Lane home Sunday morning, forcing a family of three and two friends into the bitter cold.

The fire was reported at about 11:26 a.m. at the Lee residence at 43 Fawn Lane, New Canaan Fire Marshal Fred Baker said. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy fire coming out of the two-story structure. The size of the fire prompted firefighters to take a defensive stance and not go inside the structure, which is located near the New Canaan-Wilton border.

“It was reported that everybody was out, and no one was trapped,” Baker said. “The fire was just too far involved for firefighters to safely enter the structure.”

Firefighters relied on several tanker trucks to get water to the scene because no fire hydrants are located nearby. “The fire took a while to get out because of the water supply. When you deal with tankers, it takes a while,” Baker said.

It was unclear where the fire started or what caused it. “The important thing is no one was hurt,” he said.

Homeowner Dan Lee said his wife, daughter and two of his daughter’s friends were in the home at the time of the fire. While inside, the wife and daughter said they heard glass breaking and noticed what was happening. The women and the family’s two dogs immediately left the home, though the family’s cat was believed lost. The family stayed with neighbors to keep out of the bitter cold temperatures as firefighters battled the blaze.

Lee, who has lived in the home for 12 years, said he was most relieved that his family made it out safely, especially considering the tragic Christmas Day fire in Stamford that killed five people. “I’m thankful that everyone got out OK,” he said. “It’s just stuff.”

Firefighters from Norwalk, Wilton and Vista, N.Y., were among those who responded.
