The school board approved resolutions Tuesday to have Board Chairwoman Alison Bedula request a transfer of $145,000 in capital funds to pay for some improvements, and making a special appropriation of $139,000 from town officials.
The expenditures will include hiring campus monitors for Saxe Middle School and three elementary schools, which will cost about $94,000, and completing a classroom door-lock purchase and installation, expected to cost $119,000. Other upgrades will include purchasing 2-way radios, IP wireless phones, installing a push-button alarm system and establishing a school-security check-in system.
School Superintendent Mary Kolek said she has talked with First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III and Chief Financial Officer Dawn Norton about funding the security upgrades. Kolek said it’s important to expedite the process and get the orders in place as soon as possible.
School security has been an increased concern for many school districts after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton in December.
New Canaan Schools Finance Director Joe Meehan said the capital funds will come from delaying some capital projects or savings on already completed projects.
