NEW CANAAN, Conn. Langs Pharmacy, a longtime presence on Elm Street, closed its doors Tuesday morning, stunning customers and others in the downtown New Canaan area.
The inside of the windows at the pharmacy were covered. A sign on one window said the stores prescription list had been transferred to the Walgreens in New Canaan.
Calls to pharmacy owners Ben and Diana Levison were not returned Tuesday afternoon. The couple also owns a location in Weston.
New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy said she had received no indication that Langs was being shuttered.
Theyve been such a staunch member of the merchant community for some time. Im disappointed to see them go, but Im sure they had their reasons, Murphy said. Its really disappointing to hear it, but I hope their Weston store continues to do well.
Jenny Butler, manager of the Butler Fine Art Gallery, which is next door to Langs, said she saw passersby looking at the sign in the window and many, including her, were surprised. She saw some people clearing the store out, but no one had said anything about closing. Its sad to see them go, Butler said, citing her affinity for local shops.
Alan Jaffe, an attorney whose offices are next door to Langs, agreed its tough to have a longstanding shop close down. Another local established business bites the dirt. Its part of a trend, he said with a short shake of his head.
