ARMONK, N.Y. -- In the same month that Earth Day is observed, North Castle is holding two environmentally notable events.

The first is called Zero Waste Day and encourages recycling. It is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Town Hall in Armonk. Items for collection include scrap metals, clothing, shoes, cat and dog supplies, e-waste and bicycles.

Beth Pollack, co-chair of the town's Recycling Committee, spoke at the Town Board's March 25 to promote Zero Waste Day. She also offered some clarifications, such as hard-cover books now being accepted, and for people not to bring CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulbs, tires or rechargeable batteries, all of which are handled by other entities.

Different organizations will be handling certain materials. For example, Suburban Carting is handling scrap and and the Community Center of Northern Westchester is handling clothes.

The following day, the town is scheduled to hold its town-wide clean up day, which starts at 9 a.m. People can participate in different sections of town, Pollack said, whether its Armonk, North White Plains or the Eastern District.

Pollack noted that bags for participants are available at town hall, as are vests. She said that people can park at town hall or in safe locations in other parts of town.
