Value Penguin sourced all of its data from FBI violent and property crime statistics from 2012. Violent crimes were given a heavier weight (90 percent) versus property crimes (10 percent) to arrive at an overall "crime score." The lower the crime score, the safer the municipality.

Norwalk posted a "crime score" of 480. The average crime score for the Nutmeg State is 336.

The five safest communities all were in Fairfield County with Ridgefield taking the top spot, followed by: Easton, Darien, Wilton and Redding.

The rest of Fairfield County communities were ranked as follows:

  • No. 6: Weston

  • No. 8: New Canaan

  • No. 9: Greenwich

  • No. 24: Westport

  • No. 48: Fairfield

  • No. 54: Danbury

  • No. 71: Stamford

  • No 87: Bridgeport

The least-safest communities were New Haven and Hartford with crime scores of 1,798 and 1,622, respectively.
