PHILADELPHIA -- Amtrak service from Philadelphia to New York has been suspended indefinitely after a deadly derailment near Philadelphia late Tuesday left seven dead and hundreds hospitalized.
There is limited service from New York to Boston.
The train, headed to New York City, crashed at approximately 9:20 p.m., reports said.
Eight to 10 cars derailed with about 243 people on board (with five of the 243 being Amtrak employees), officials said. Six trains reportedly overturned.
It was the worst accident on Amtrak's busy Northeast corridor in 28 years.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-Westchester/Putnam) said he was "tremendously saddened by the heart-wrenching scenes of yet another horrific train accident.
"We need a full and speedy investigation to learn how and why this accident occurred and take real and immediate steps to stop these tragedies from happening.
"All of us in the Hudson Valley send our thoughts and prayers to the victims and first-responders in Philadelphia.”
