NEW CANAAN, Conn. Fear not, New Canaan residents. The post office is not skipping town.
Christine Dugas, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service, said Friday that the agency has no plans to leave New Canaan. Worries about a possible departure came about after Elm Street Partners, the company that owns the post office building on Pine Street, placed a sign atop the building indicating there was space available for lease.
The New Canaan post office is not closing, said Dugas, who works in the district that represents Connecticut, Rhode Island and a portion of Massachusetts. I can tell you that weve assigned a broker to renegotiate the lease or find alternate quarters in a similar location.
That similar location would be in the downtown area, Dugas said. The 30-year lease at the Pine Street building expires on Jan. 31, 2014.
Dugas said she was surprised that Elm Street Partners had placed the sign there. Officials from Elm Street Partners could not be reached for comment on Friday.
