Connecticut was one of 21 states identified by the Department of Homeland Security that Russia attempted to hack, according to Politico.com.

The Connecticut system was scanned but not breached by the hackers, Merrill told the Courant.

The states affected are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, Politico said.

Russia has denied election meddling, and President Donald Trump has denied any collusion with Russia.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) called it a brazen Russian campaign to interfere in the 2016 American elections.

"Recent reports about Russian surreptitious scans of Connecticut systems reaffirm the urgency and importance of the ongoing federal investigations," Blumenthal said. "The investigations concern such Russian election meddling, alleged Trump campaign collusion with it, and possible obstruction of justice-- by the Special Counsel, and separately by Congressional committees.

"I will vigorously support such investigations, including by the Senate Judiciary Committee, where I serve. These reports are further evidence that the Russians and anyone who aided them should be made to pay a steep price for any such criminal wrongdoing."
