“I think it’s disgusting -- that’s what I think,” Pitasi said from behind the counter of his gun shop.
The politicians who supported the bill did so without listening to the people they represent and did what they wanted for their own fortune or misfortune, Pitasi said.
The gun shop owner said he teaches people of all walks of life and political beliefs the proper way to handle firearms, and none want limits on their ownership of guns.
Pitasi said he already does background checks through the state, and if someone does not check out he will not sell them a weapon. He can’t say what someone will do with it once they leave. He keeps a detailed ledger at Stamford Tactical that contains information on every person who purchases anything from the store.
“This law isn’t going to do anything,” Pitasi said, comparing Connecticut with Chicago, where the gun laws are strict and the murder rate high. “It’s going to happen here.”
The new law will hurt his business, limiting what he will be able to sell, he said. Pitasi said he will have to “reinvent the wheel” to adjust and will try to sell something else.
Although he believes business will ultimately slip, he said he has seen a big boost since the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and the collective thought that stricter laws were coming. Pitasi described the surge as possibly record setting and said some of his customers looking to buy guns recently had no idea how to use them.
“That’s why my eyes are red,” Pitasi said.
