The woman, Miriam Carey, 34, had a history of mental health problems and was well known to local authorities in Stamford, NBC Connecticut reported Friday morning.
Carey was employed by Dr. Barry Weiss, a Hamden dentist, who told NBC Connecticut that he fired her in August 2012 after patients complained that she was too rough. He said she appeared increasingly stressed after an unplanned pregnancy.
Her mother told ABC News that her daughter had postpartum depression after having a daughter last August but had no history of violence.
Carey, who was the driver of the car in the chaotic chase scene Thursday, lived with her 1-year-old daughter at Woodside Green near Scalzi Park just north of downtown Stamford.
All of the dozens of residents of the 50-condominium complex were evacuated late Thursday afternoon as the FBI prepared to begin an investigation. Residents were not allowed to return late Thursday as FBI agents awaited a search warrant.
The building was surrounded by police and official vehicles, and Bridge Street was closed between Washington Boulevard and Summer Street.
Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia said in a press statement late Thursday that city officials cannot provide information on the case.
"A full investigation is underway by federal authorities who are in Stamford currently," Pavia said in the press release. "Stamford police are assisting federal authorities as needed."
In his statement, he directed all inquiries to the New Haven-based Connecticut Joint Terrorism Task Force.
