Teen Charged In DC Murder Of Trumbull Native Who Interned For Himes

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — An 18-year-old man was apprehended Monday and charged in the stabbing death on a subway train in Washington, D.C., of a Trumbull native who interned for U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, according to the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington.

Fourth District patrol officers arrested Jasper Spires of Washington, D.C., after locating him in the 4800 block of Georgia Avenue, NW, police said. Spires was charged with Murder I While Armed, police said.

Spires had been identified as a suspect in the shocking July 4 fatal stabbing of Trumbull High graduate Kevin Joseph Sutherland, 24, of Northeast, Washington, D.C.

On Saturday, July 4, at 12:50 p.m., officers on patrol from the Fifth District were alerted by Metro Transit Officers of a stabbing aboard a metro train in the NOMA-Gallaudet Metro Station, located in the 200 block of Florida Avenue, Northeast, police said.

Upon arrival, officers found Sutherland, who was unconscious and suffering from apparent stab wounds, police said. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene and found no signs of life, police said. He was declared dead at the scene and his body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

“With immense sadness, on behalf of the Town of Trumbull, I offer my sincere condolences to the family of Kevin Sutherland,” First Selectman Timothy Herbst said via Twitter.

Kevin Sutherland was the son of Doug and Terry Sutherland and was a graduate of American University.

"Am absolutely heartbroken by the tragic loss of intern, staffer & wonderful friend, Kevin Sutherland. I've known few as selfless & decent," Himes said via Twitter on Sunday afternoon. Himes also posted a profile photo of himself with Sutherland.

At the time of his death, Sutherland worked as a digital strategist at New Blue Interactive in Washington, D.C., a boutique digital/new media strategy firm that specializes in helping Democratic candidates and causes.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of our dear employee and friend Kevin Sutherland," said a statement from New Blue Interactive on its Facebook page. "We are heartbroken to hear of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time."
