The teen fell down an elevator shaft at the former United Hospital building, plunging several stories, police said. The name of the boy has not yet been released.

Port Chester Mayor Richard Falanka said the incident is still under police investigation, but additional details are expected to be released as they become available.

“Last night, a young man died from a fall at the former United Hospital site. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of the victim. The entire village mourns this tragic loss with them. They are not alone in grief,” he said.

United Hospital has been abandoned for more than a decade, since it shuttered its doors in 2005 at the building on the Boston Post Road.

The Westchester County Police Department and Port Chester Police Department both responded to the scene. Aviation units were dispatched in the area as well.
