WESTPORT, Conn. – As a winter storm hits the Northeast, Public Works Director Stephen Edwards is reminding Westport residents of the town's snow-plowing policy.

“There are 123 miles of streets in the Town of Westport maintained by the Department of Public Works,” said Edwards. “Snow removal can cost up to $2,500 per hour; therefore, it is important for the town to use its resources wisely with cooperation from the residents to provide the appropriate response while minimizing the cost.”

Streets are plowed and sanded in order of priority. Main roads are addressed first, with special attention to steep hills and difficult intersections. Following are side streets and dead-end streets. A single pass will be made on side streets to keep them open, but emphasis will be placed on main roads until the storm has stopped.

Because snow plows angle to the driver’s right, the plows push snow in front of driveways. To avoid extra shoveling, Edwards recommends that residents wait until DPW crews have completed the final cleanup on their streets.

Per town ordinance, property owners within the business district are responsible for keeping all sidewalks along their property clear of snow and ice.

The town repairs and replaces only mailboxes and posts struck by a plow blade. A paint mark or tire tracks usually supply evidence of a strike. Westport does not repair or replace mailboxes and posts that fall from the force of plowed snow.

Belgian block, landscaping, dog fences, sprinklers, lights, etc., will not be replaced if these items are installed within the town’s right-of-way.

The Town of Westport prohibits plow contractors from pushing snow from driveways or parking lots onto town streets.
