What to Know About Today's Events

Come out and celebrate Memorial Day with your neighbors! The town’s parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church at 111 Oenoke Ridge. From there, it will march to Lakeview Cemetery, where there will be a service honoring our service men and women. Reverend Paul E. Gilmore of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan will give an invocation and benediction, and Paul Sedlak will follow as guest speaker.

Seldak is a member of New Canaan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 653. He joined the Air Force after graduating from Colgate University in 1958, and served in bases in Kansas, Alaska, England, Japan and Turkey during his seven years of active duty. He has lived in New Canaan for 37 years.

This year’s grand marshals are New Canaan’s World War II veterans. Those interested in joining in as grand marshals can meet at the First Presbyterian Church parking lot at 9 a.m., ready to board the vehicles that will lead the parade.

After the parade, be sure to stop by the New Canaan Fire Department on Main Street, where the town’s firefighters will be grilling free hot dogs for those who are interested. If you’re hungry beforehand, you can head over to the Masonic Temple, also on Main Street, where the New Canaan’s Harmony Lodge No. 67, the Methodist Church of New Canaan and the New England Academy of Dance are co-hosting a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
