Wilton Man Pushes Green to the Max

Can you imagine being charged to drive your child to school? Wilton resident Richard Nichol can, and he shared it and other ideas with those at Tuesday night’s annual meeting of Wilton Go Green.

“If the town wants to support energy efficiency, it should do these things,” he said.

Along with charging parents who drive children to school he suggested that the town give tax rebates to residents who buy fuel-efficient cars and that electricity meters be put inside homes instead of outside. Nichol believes people would adopt better habits if they saw how much energy they were using.

“Why can’t I see what [the meter] is doing?” Nichol says. “It’s not visible to me.”

While Nichol admitted to not owning a Chevy Volt, he did say his property is on wetlands, which he tries to protect. He said he doesn’t cut the grass or use pesticides on his lawn, thereby doing no harm to Comstock Pond, which is at the bottom of his property.

“I am trying to be that last line of defense,” he says.

Tuesday’s annual meeting at the Cannon Grange was the first the organization will have to help members learn about its policies and programs and share ideas on how Wilton Go Green can improve the town’s carbon footprint. Nichol was the only resident to suggest green measures at the meeting.
