Showers and possible thunderstorms are forecast for the whole day, with a high in the mid-70s.

After a cold front moves across the region, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected after 9 p.m., the weather service said. Temperatures will dip in the upper 40s overnight.

Strong and gusty winds are possible along with heavy rainfall. Severe thunderstorms are also possible with the storm. Flooding in areas of poor drainage is possible as a half to an inch of rain could fall.

A gale watch and a small craft advisory is in effect for Long Island Sound, with a period of gale force wind possible late Monday, the weather service said. Winds of 15 to 20 knots with gusts of up to 35 knots are possible with seas of 3 to 6 feet, the weather service said.

Wind speed are expected to produce hazardous conditions to small craft and inexperienced mariners, who are warned to avoid navigating in these conditions.

But after the storm blows through, Tuesday should dawn sunny and nice, with a high near 65 degrees in Fairfield County.
