According to fire officials, a worker for Manafort Construction was in a trench using an gasoline-powered saw to cut a water main. The saw apparently kicked back and caused a fatal injury to the man’s neck.

Once the on-site investigation is completed and the scene cleared, the construction company will finish replacing the water main. The final repair is expected to take four to six hours.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and to his co-workers at Manafort,” said Andrew Nunn, the city’s chief administrative officer. “That is our primary concern.”

The work is part of ongoing airport safety upgrades, which are expected to be completed this fall.

The worker was pronounced dead at the scene. Bridgeport and Stratford police are investigating, and firefighters from Bridgeport and Stratford responded. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration also is on the scene conducting an investigation.

The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m.

A portion of the airport has no water service. Because there is no capacity for fire suppression, the airport was closed to air travel at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Officials at Sikorsky alerted the FAA, which issued a “Notice to Airmen” that there are no departures or arrivals.
