Yale-New Haven Hospital Admits Patient With Ebola-Like Symptoms

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Yale-New Haven Hospital has admitted a patient who recently traveled to Liberia and was admitted Wednesday night with a fever, according to the Hartford Courant.

"Yale-New Haven Hospital admitted a patient late Wednesday night for evaluation of Ebola-like symptoms. We have not confirmed or ruled-out any diagnosis at this point," said a statement released by the New Haven hospital Thursday morning. "We are working in cooperation with City, State and Federal health officials. There is no further information available at this time."

A HazMat team responded to the hospital late Wednesday night, and the patient was placed in isolation, the Courant reported. Tests are underway, the Courant said, although the patient's fever has subsided.

Two confirmed cases of Ebola involving health care workers have increased concern over the spread of the potentially fatal virus. President Barack Obama canceled a campaign appearance Wednesday in Bridgeport with Gov. Dannel Malloy to instead attend a White House meeting on the Ebola threat.

Malloy will hold a news conference in Hartford on Thursday afternoon to provide residents with information on Connecticut’s precautionary and preparatory measures regarding the Ebola virus. He will be joined by Department of Public Health Commissioner Jewel Mullen and other state officials at 2 p.m. at the State Emergency Operations Center in Hartford.

In the event of a confirmed case of Ebola infection or exposure in Connecticut, state officials have the power to coordinate a targeted quarantine, according to a new order signed last week by Gov. Dannel Malloy.

By signing the order, Malloy is declaring a public health emergency. The commissioner of the Department of Public Health will now have the ability to effectively quarantine an individual or a group of individuals who may have been exposed to or infected with the Ebola virus.
