With all of the chaos and confusion, the 55-year-old Hashmall wasn’t able to complete the race. But she did make it out of Boston and back to Yorktown safely, her husband Jay Hashmall said Tuesday afternoon.
Three people died and more than 170 others were injured when two bombs exploded near the finish line at the Boston Marathon Monday. The other three Yorktown runners who entered the Boston Marathon finished the race before the two explosions went off, according to the Boston Marathon website.
Jay Hashmall was watching video of the marathon on his laptop in Yorktown and waiting for Ellie to cross the finish line when he saw the explosions.
“It was a pretty harrowing experience because I saw that she had crossed the 40k line (24.9 miles) and was getting really close to the finish. So she was about a mile away when the explosions occurred and she wasn’t able to finish,” Jay Hashmall said, adding that he wasn’t able to make the trip to Boston to tend to other family concerns. “Fortunately I wasn’t there because that’s exactly where I would’ve been standing waiting for her to come across the finish line.”
A majority of the 23,000 runners who participated in the 26-mile marathon were able to cross the finish line before a bomb placed in a trash can exploded at about 2:50 p.m. near the finish line at Boylston Street, according to previous reports.
Yorktown residents Michael Schmutzer, Mary Natell and Michael Moccia all finished the race before 2 p.m. Schmutzer finished at about 1:15 p.m., Natell finished at 1:48 p.m. and Moccia finished 1:50 p.m., according to the race’s website.
