Edward Ellsworth Weed, 97, Vice President, New Canaan Savings Bank

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Edward Ellsworth Weed of New Canaan died Monday, April 28. He was 97.

Weed was born in New Canaan, he was the son of Benjamin Franklin Weed and Ethel Millet Weed. He was a graduate of New Canaan High School and later attended the University of Bridgeport. He served in Europe during World War II as an army technician in the 573rd Signal Air Warning Battalion. He worked cleaning furnaces and installing coal stokers and AGA stoves and then moved on to installing dial telephone equipment at the telephone office in New Canaan. He then spent a short time working as a New Canaan police officer prior to his service in the army. Following World War II, he started working as a teller at the New Canaan Savings Bank and worked his way up to vice president during his 31 years there. He was a 60-plus year member of the Harmony Lodge No. 67 in New Canaan and held all of the officers’ positions including his year of Master in 1962. He was also a member of the New Canaan Veterans of Foreign Wars and the New Canaan Old Timers’ Association.

Weed is survived by his son, Douglas Weed (Jeanne) of Wheaton, Ill.; daughter, Barbara Tiani (Richard) of Norwalk; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Eleanor; brothers, Robert F. Weed and Richard M. Weed; and sister, Dorothy Weed.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 5 at the Magner Funeral Home 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk, CT 06850. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, 352 Main St. New Canaan, CT 06840.
