NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Francois R. Barfuss, a longtime New Canaan resident, died June 8 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 82.
Born Nov. 18, 1929, in New York City, he was the son of Otto and Ida Barfuss. He was married to the late Carolyn Giddings Barfuss. He graduated from Regis High School as valedictorian and from Fordham University, summa cum laude.
After a stint in Germany with U.S. Army intelligence, Barfuss joined Deloitte & Touche, where he remained for nearly 40 years as a partner. He enjoyed spending time with family and sailing with his wife, Carolyn. He served as treasurer of the Milford Yacht Club and held many positions with the Darien Power Squadron.
Barfuss retired in 1993 and became involved in charitable work, especially with the Franciscan Family Apostolate, Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan and Lapham Community Center of New Canaan.
He is survived by a son, Andy (Lisa) Barfuss of New Canaan; three daughters, Annie (Burt) Hostrawser of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Marjorie (Clive) Bannister of London, England, and Eileen (Paul) Baber of Kent, England; a sister, Sharon Sullivan of New York City; and 10 grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. Burial will take place at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich at a later date. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Family Apostolate. The organization alleviates poverty in the Indian provinces of Kerala and Andra Pradesh.
