NEW CANAAN, Conn. – George M. Haynes, a former New Canaan Realtor and Stamford native, died July 1 at the age of 88.
A memorial service for the former president of the New Canaan Board of Realtors will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at Emerald Golf Club in New Bern, N.C.
Haynes was raised in the Springfield section of Stamford and graduated from Stamford High School in 1942. He served with the U.S. Army Air Forces in Germany and received a Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge, Haynes graduated from the University of Connecticut and became a Realtor.
Haynes opened a business doing real estate and development in New Canaan in 1958. During his career, he helped pass the condominium law in Connecticut and taught GRI and condominium real estate law.
He served as president of the New Canaan Board of Realtors for two terms and the Connecticut Association of Realtors. He also served as director of the National Association of Realtors for several years. He retired from his practice in 1997.
Apart from real estate, Haynes was also involved in politics and worked for the Democratic Party. He moved to the Greenbrier section of New Bern in 2001, where he enjoyed gardening, woodworking and golf.
Haynes is survived by his wife, Carol Greenman Haynes; a daughter, Laura Leslie Haynes, of Orlando, Fla.; two stepsons, Jay H. (Leslie) Monahan, of Shelton and Richard Roche, of California; several step-grandchildren; a niece; a nephew and many cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Lester Haynes; and a stepson, David Monahan.
