Karl F. Grassman, 97, Of New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Karl F. Grassmann, 97, of New Canaan, died Thursday, March 12.

He was born May 20, 1917, in Halle an der Saale, Germany, to Hermann and Helene Grassmann.

He was a high-ranking officer in the German military, and was wounded seven times during his service.

Grassman immigrated to the United States in 1952, and became one of the founding charter members of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in New Canaan. He taught confirmation class and sat on the council for many years.

He also served as property manager on the Irwin Estate.

Survivors include one son, Peter (Kathy) Grassman; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Kate Bitzer Grassmann; one daughter, Ingeborg Grassman Ziegahn; one son-in-law, Joseph William Ziegahn; and six brothers, Kurt, Paul, Hermann, Hans, Gerhart, and Walter.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdayat St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan.

Interment will follow at the Lakeview Cemetery.

Hoyt Funeral Home, New Canaan, is handling the arrangements.
