Mary Katherine Karl, 88, Of New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Mary Katherine Karl, 88, a lifelong New Canaan resident, died Saturday, March 7,

She was born in New Canaan on July 11, 1926, to Leo and Rose Kelley Karl.

She made numerous contributions to the local community including being an active parishioner of St. Aloysius Church, delivering Meals on Wheels, providing transportation and aid to the elderly, and a was a longtime member of the Our Ladies Guild.

Her most notable contribution to the community was the 35 years she served as school nurse in the New Canaan School System, including St. Aloysius, East School and Saxe Middle School before she retired in 1991.

She was born and raised on Carter Street, where she resided her entire life. She was educated by her Aunt Mary and namesake at the Little Red School House. She graduated New Canaan High School in 1943. She attended St. Francis Hospital in Hartford to obtain her nursing degree before she graduated St. Joseph’s College in 1951 with a bachelor’s in child psychology.

She is survived by her brother, Leo E. Karl Jr. and his wife Katherine of New Canaan, and her sister-in-law, Margaret Karl of Trumbull, CT ,

She was predeceased by her three brothers Msgr. Edward Karl, Paul Karl and Harry Karl and his wife Marion.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 10 from 4-8 p.m. at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, March 11 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, Cherry St. in New Canaan. Interment will be in the family plot in St John’s Cemetery, Norwalk.

Contributions will benefit the continuing education of local nurses via the scholarship fund established upon her retirement in 1991.
