Rita B. Rivera, 84, Valedictorian At New Canaan High

SOUTHPORT, Conn. – Rita Bianco Rivera, of Southport and formerly of Stamford, died on Sept. 6 after a long illness. She was 84.

Rivera was born in New Canaan on Aug. 2, 1931, to Carlo and Teresa DeCotis Bianco.

She was class valedictorian for New Canaan High School, and went on to work as a legal secretary and paralegal at local firms such as Morse, Marvin & Walker of New Canaan; Silver, Golub & Teitell, and Wofsey, Rosen; and Kweskin & Kuriansky.

She is survived by her husband Jesús Rivera; four children, Mariya and her partner John Block, John, Robert and his wife Nancy of Norcross, Ga., and Linda Quinn and Thomas of Fairfield; six grandchildren; brother Ted Bianco and wife Nancy of Stamford, sister Gloria Vitti of New Canaan; sister-in-law Hilde Shumpert of Moore, S.C.; many nieces and nephews, and longtime friend Grace Grasso of New Canaan.

Rivera was predeceased by her parents, brothers Al and Lou Bianco, sister Celeste Perna, brothers-in-law Vincent Vitti and Virginio Perna and sisters-in-law Ann and Pauline Bianco.

Calling hours are at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Edmund W. Dougiello Funeral Home, at 36 S. Pine Creek Road in Fairfield, with a Mass of Christian burial to follow at St. Anthony's Church in Fairfield at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia or to VITAS Healthcare/Hospice.
