Timothy J. Murphy, 55, New Canaan Native, Retired Norwalk Police Lieutenant

NORWALK, Conn. – Retired Police Lt. Timothy J. Murphy, a 33-year veteran of the Norwalk Police Department, died Friday, Jan. 29, at his home in Florida after a battle with cancer. He was 55.

He was born in Bronxville, N.Y., on Sept. 13, 1960, the son of John and Alice Dolan Murphy. 

He was raised in New Canaan, attended Trinity Pawling Prep School, was a graduate of St. Leo College and received his master’s degree from the University of New Haven. In addition to his 33 years of service to Norwalk, he was an avid hockey player and a founding member of the Norwalk Police Hockey Team. He was proud to be an adjunct professor at Norwalk Community College and was an avid golfer.

In addition to his wife, Kimberley Murphy, he is survived by his stepdaughters Nicole and Danielle; his brothers John, David and Brian; his sisters Karen and Joanne; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and his brothers in blue.

His family will receive friends Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 21 Cherry St., New Canaan.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to National Hockey League Foundation – Hockey Fights Cancer and sent to Ann Marie Lynch, Director, Community Relations, National Hockey League, 1185 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10036.
