Sutherland, 24, who was born in Bridgeport, was a 2009 graduate of Trumbull High School.

He earned his bachelor's degree in political science and communications in 2013 at American University. Sutherland was elected to two terms as secretary of student government and touched the community so deeply that the university flags were flown at half-staff to honor his memory.

While in college, he worked as an intern for U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, both in his campaign and congressional offices, and also volunteered for the White House Office of Presidential Correspondence.

"Am absolutely heartbroken by the tragic loss of intern, staffer & wonderful friend, Kevin Sutherland. I've known few as selfless & decent," Himes said via Twitter. Himes also posted a profile photo of himself with Sutherland.

Sutherland, who lived in Washington, D.C., was employed at New Blue Interactive in Washington as a digital strategist.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of our dear employee and friend Kevin Sutherland," said a statement from New Blue Interactive on its Facebook page. "We are heartbroken to hear of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time."

Funeral services will take place Monday, July 13, at 9:30 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in St. Jude Church, Monroe. Entombment will follow in the St. Monica Mausoleum in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull.

Doug and Theresa Sutherland remember their son's successes living in the city he loved. He especially loved photography and taking pictures in his new hometown of Washington, D.C. Read more about their memories here on the Trumbull Times.

Jasper Spires,18, of Washington, D.C., was charged with Murder I While Armed, police said, in connection with the slaying.

Spires punched Sutherland, stabbed him 30 or 40 times, and kicked him repeatedly in front of about a dozen other passengers during a cellphone robbery gone wrong, according to police documents and the Washington Post. Not a single one of the passengers intervened in the violent attack, police said.
